AMUSEMENTS.
THE REGENT. In “Stark Mad,” screening finally at the Regent to-night, the weird life of the jungle is graphically depicted. One senses, rather than sees or hears, the whistle of winds, beat of rain, arrows whirring through darkness, creaking of rusty hinges of mysterious doors, groan of disappearing floors, even the gasping “ohs” and “ahs” of terrified explorers. The story is that of an expedition to the Central American jungle in search of the son of the millionaire backer of the expedition, who has been lost there -for some •time. In the Jungle they are confronted by many terrors not the least of which Is a huge gorilla. This sensational all talkie film will be shown finally to-night. For the week-end entertainment a great double star programme ■will be shown, headed by the prince of comedians, Reginald Denny, in a comedy titled “Embarrassing Moments.” In this feature Denny excels himself, and it is perhaps the greatest comedy this noted comedian has given us. In addition Sue Carol and Nick Stuart are both seen in a very fine modern version of the present day youth titled “Girls Gone Wild.” This is a clever story of a care-free flapper, spoiled by indulgent parents and permitted to shatter laws with impunity, who goes a step to far in search of a ’’thrill’’ i and becomes involved in a blood 1 feud between desperate gangsters. I Saved by the heroism of a representative of the despised law and the poor-boy sweetheart she had flouted because he was “too honest.” she is regenerated by love and a~realisation that modern freedom of youth is not license. This double star programme will also be screened at the matinee. OPERA HOUSE. "Wolves of the Underworld,” to be screened at the Opera House tonight and to-morrow, will have a strong appeal to lovers of a good detective yarn. In it we see a bank note counterfeiter at work. A young criminologist sets out to round up and capture the gang. There are many thrills, especially when, imprisoned in an underground vault, the counterfeiter, the criminologist and a young wife, watch with horror the gradual working of an infernal machine which they are powerless to stop, and when it reaches a certain point will blow the vault to atoms. The second big feature, “North Star,” is an exciting Western tale of unusual interest, in which Ken Maynard shows his splendid acting ability and “Strongheart,” his wonderfully trained dog. shows his excellent intelligence. Included in the programme are a’-Gazotte, Cartoon, Travel and Comedy. • *
