PAGE FROM THE PAST.

TAURAXGA 53 YEARS AGO. An unusual occurrence, clue apparently to some tidal disturbance, i; recorded in the Bay of Plenty Time; of May 16th., ISS7. We read:— "Considerable excitement was'caused on the wharf on Saturady night about nine o'clock by the breakage of the after hawser of the s.s. Wanaka. The Wanaka was moored at the end of the T when, without any previous warning, her after hawser, which was fastened to the wharf, snapped, and 'caused her to heel over at! a considerable angle. Captain Marks, harbourmaster, went on board at once and extricated the vessel from her critical position, by clearing her away from the wharf and letting her drop a short distance down the stream. At the time of the accident, which is attributed to a tidal disturbance, caused by a sudden rising of the tide, the gangway was brought to a. perpendicular position on .the side of the steamer, and two persons who were coming down it had a narrow escape. Tho s.s. Roweha was lying alongside the Wanaka, and her line also parted at the same time, but she was equally fortunate witli the Wanaka, in escaping without injury. In the same issue we find this paragraph:— "The ceremonial of the installation of the officers of the 'Hope cf Tauranga' Juvenile Temple for the ensuing quarter took place at the Temperance Hall on Saturday afternoon last. The following officers were installed bv Bro. Gillman. Superintendcn:—Thomas Allely, C.T.; Eli;?, Allely, V.T.; Duncan Munro, C. ; Henrv Rhodes, P.T.; Peter Munro, U.S.; H-nry McKellar. T.; Aitthur Carr, K.S. ; Jemima. Robertson, M.; Isabella Hutler. 1.G.: Thomas Lemon, 0.G.; James Redfern, A.S.: William Harvev. D.M.; Tames Salt, R.H.S.; Richard Rhodes. L.H.S.
