TAURANGA BOROUGH COUNCIL’S MEETING

Lighting of Post Office Steps. STOKAOK OF I'KTROIi. The" fortnightly meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. C. Kobbins (in the chair), Crs F. J. Allely, C. Whiting, H. McKenzie, A. E. Newsham, J. Tanner, J. Law, D. A. Ivory, J. M. Daines and T. Stuart. Street JLoaiis. The Secretary to the Treasury wrote relative to streets loans of £1430 and £4OOO, and advised that an Order in Council, authorising the raising of the loans on the instalment repayment system and the I payment of interest at six per cent., | is being prepared. i The letter was received. I

I'lan of Subdivision. Mr R. T. Coulding, surveyor and civil engineer, forwarded plan of subdivision of Lots 579 and 58 0, Section 11, for the Council's consideration. It was pointed out that the land is in Morris Street. Cr Allely moved—That the plan be agreed to.—Seconded by Cr Ivory and carried.

Assessment Court. The Officer in Charge of the Val uation Department, Auckland, wrote stating it may be necessary to hole: a sitting of the Assessment Courl in the borough this year. It was stated that Mr G. 11. 01 lard is the Council's assessor. Recreation Reserve. The Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, wrote relative to the desire of the Council to change the purposes of a certain area of recreation reserve, and advised that the matter appears to be one for consideration in connection with the Local Legislation Bill. He forwarded a copy of the Standing Orders relating to the introduction of local legislation. The reserve is on the waterfront. Cr Newsham moved—That steps be taken as indicated in the Department's letter.—Seconded by Cr Whiting and carried. Land Transfer Notice. The District Land Registrar, Auckland, forwarded Land Transfer Act notice in respect to Lot 362, Sec- , tion 11, fronting Cameron Road, in the estate of the late Mr G. Davoren. —Received.

Storage of Petrol. Mr 11. Girling Butcher, Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, forwarded extract from Mr Barringer's report on his recent inspection of Taurangu, as follows: F. N. Christian.—This firm are storing forty gallon drums of petrol In the same depot as cased goods. As the experience of recent fires has shown the necessity for storing separately it will be necessary for this firm to store forty gallon drums within an open compound or in an approved depot separate from cased ' dangerous goods. Guinness Bros. —Similar conditions of storage as mentioned above were noted in respect of Messrs Guinness Bros., and the provisions of a drum compound on Harbour Board lease were discussed. This site has been approved by this Department. A number of places where dangerous goods are stored were visited in company with the local inspector and the conditions of storage were found to be satisfactory. The Inspector stated he had dealt with the matter referred to in his report. Affiliation Question. The Acting Secretary of the Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities Association of New Zealand Wellington wrote in regard to the Council affiliating with the Association. The Council decided to reply that it could not see its way to affiliate. Interest oil Loan Moneys. The Secretary to the Municipal Association. Wellington, wrote stating that the Council's letter in reference to the rate of interest on loan moneys was considered by the Executive, when it was decided that no action could be taken in the matter, the rate of interest which the Government has to offer being determined by causes which are beyond the province of the local,, bodies.—Received. Verandah in Willow Street. Mr W. J. Bagent, Agent for the Public Trustee, Tauranga, wrote stating that the Public Trustee, as Executor of the Estate of F. H.; Hammond, deceased, has under consideration the erection of a new verandah to the baker' shop of this estate in Willow Street. It is suggested that if the Borough Council would consider the extension" of the verandah of the new electric department building up to Hammond's shop boundary a continuous verandah of one design would add to the appearance of the Street frontage, if this small break in the line over the right-of-way is obviated." Cr Whiting moved —That the matter be referred to the Electricity Committee to report upon at next meeting.—Seconded by Cr Stuart and carried. Lighting or Vost Office Steps. Mr J. E. Ward, Postmaster, wrote in regard to the mater of the illumination of the steps leading from Willow Street to the Post Office, and stated: "I am directed to inquire whether, in the event of this Department supplying and placing a lamp on the power pole some few yards north of the steps, the Borough Council would agree to its being connected to the street lighting circuit. The Mayor explained that some time ago representations were made to the Department to the effect that the steps be illuminated on each side. Cr Newsham moved —That the Department be asked to install lights on each side of the steps.—Seconded by Cr Tanner and carried. Town Hall license Fee. The Finance Committee recommended in regard to a request from Tauranga Theatres, Ltd., that the amount of the license fee of the Town Hall for the previous year be refunded, provided such action is in order. The recommendation of the Committee was adopted. Municipal Abattoir. Mr A. T. llutherford, abattoir manager, forwarded report giving particulars of stock slaughtered at the abattoir during the month of April: Cattle, 80; sheep. 199; lambs, , 15; calves, 2: pigs, 19. Condemn-! ed: Cattle. 1. \ Engineer's Iteport. Mr C. W. Boak. engineer, preBented the following report: Electricity Public Works Department: No intimation of any nature has been received concerning tne current supply arrangements. It is still essential, at times, to run the

From the nature of the fault it would have been dangerous to remedy matters with the power on, and for this re'ason it was necessary to make the circuit dead. A new distribution transformer has come to hand and is now installed at Wharf Street outdoor station. The old unit for this station is availi able as a spare, The access rj3ad- . way tb McLaren's power house is being repaired and resurfaced. Streets General Account. —The only charges on this account at the present moment are: —(a) Overhaul of crusher elevator; (b) overhaul of steam roller; (c) surfaceman. Tile report was adopted. Inspector's Report. The following report was submit- : ted by Mr R. Bamberry, inspector: 1. Buildings.— Permits to the value of .£llBO were issued. 2. Drainage.—Five permits were • issued. No connections were made ' to the main sewers. A few properties (three or four) are still to be ; connected to the sewers and I am serving notices calling on the owners to have the work carried out. : 3. Infectious Disease. —One case of pneumonia was notified. 4. Noxious Weeds. —Seven notices were served. I hope to complete a i survey of the borough this month in regard to gorse, etc. i 5. Traffic. —There is nothing of importance to report under this head ' 6. Water. —I.have nothing to report under this head. 7. Dangerous Goods. —Following 1 the visit of the Department inspec- ', tor a report was received. Kverything is stated to be in order except that the Department is now pressing that all drums be stored in open ■ compounds instead of in stores.
