DOWRY FOR A BRIDE.
The Town Council of Rothesay has approved of Miss Hannah Bain being appointed as Bute dowry maid in fulfilment of the bequest of the late Marquis of Bute, who left a suifir of money in the council’s custody with the instructions that every year the interest should be given as a dowry ■to one>or more Rothesay girls about to become married. The latest recipient is a 19-year-okl car conductress. As there was only one applicant she will receive the full sum, which amounts to £47. Miss Bain is engaged to be married to Mr Harold Arthur, an Edinburgh electrician, employed in the G.P.0.. whom she met while on holiday at Leith. A condition that must be duly observed in the granting of tbe dowry is that the Provost of Rothesay, or one of the magistrates, must attend the ceremony and read to the ! newly-married gouple the first Hi verses of St. John’s gospel, describ- 1 ing the changing of water into wine at the marriage feast at Cana of Galilee
