NEW ZEALAND BUTTER

CANADIAN DEMAND

Vancouver, Aug. 7. In the course of a speech at Powell River last evening the Leader of tho Opposition, Mr R. B. Bennett, denied that the Conservative* had opposed the Australian trade treaty. They had pointed out that the effect of the treaty, in tho form sanctioned by the Government, was beneficial to certain industries but was detrimental to the dairy industry. The Government afterwards realised that this was the case and placed a dumping duty on the dairy products of Australia which were subsidised at homo. As a result last year Canada purchased only a small quantity of those products from Australia, but the Govenment had extended tho provisions to New Zealand. As a consequence 28,000,0001 b of butter had been imported last year. Canada had now 101,000 leas cows and New Zealand had 64,000 more cows. Canada now depended upon New Zealand for her supply of butter.
