RIFLE SHOOTING
FLOYD CHAMPIONSHIP BELT. A rifle shooting contest of more than urdinax-y interest for members of the Tauranga Defence Rifle Club was fired on the local range on Saturday, when the final shoot for the Floyd Championship Belt took place. The ranges were 200 yds and 300 yds, 10 shots at each range, with one optional sighter at each distance. The competition was keen but difficult shooting conditions kept the scoring down. Nevertheless President Mirrielees registered 87, a good shoot under the adverse conditions prevailing, and incidentally the highest score for the day. Rifleman Oliver, the present holder of the Belt, and Rifleman J ohnston were each expected to make a big struggle for the trophy, the latter in the end proving successful by a margin of only one point, and thus becoming the champion for the season 1928-29. President Mirrieles made a splendid effort to regain lost ground lost earlier in the Belt series, but the task was not an easy one and he finished two points below Oliver. The following are the leading scores for the day: _ 200 300 Toyds yds tal Pres. Mirrielees 43 44 87 W. A. Carswell 43 40 83 B. Johnston 44 39 83 H. Oliver . 45 37 82 W. H. J. Poole 41 39 80 R. M.
