BUSH FIRES NEAR ROTORUA

LOSSES OF SETTLERS, Rotorua, Dec. 20. Belated accounts of ..the bush fires in the Mamaku district on Sunday are now coming in. The fire- started at Mamaku and swept a path to To Pit. In a- few hours it had covered over ten miles. Everything went down before it.

The- settlers owning property affected by the- fire are: —Messrs Pemberton, Spanner, Boyd, V. Karl, S. Hale, P. Robinson and M, Joyce, The National Timber Co.’s standing bush and milling timber was saved, though completely surrounded' by the fire. Some green logs on the skids were burned.

The fire burned with incredible fierceness in a narrow !ano half a mile wide-. Mr Hale lost 12 beasts burned and 30 injured, also-150 acres of grass. Other 'settlers- lost fences and grass. So far no other loss of stock is reported. Heavy rain is now falling.
