A clue to the Government’s action in regard to the ren ten mark has been revealed by the announcement that the Finance Ministry has issued a statement to civil servants that it cannot pay the: arrears of salaries, except by cheque. Though these are the- last official salaries- payable before Christmas, the unemployment doles are swallowing up the receipts at an appalling rate. The Labour Ministry states that there are 1,500,000 unemployed in unoccupied Germany and 2,000,000 in the occupied territory. The public have 4 been notified that the tax collectors offices will be open on Christmas Eve.
