Tauranga. to-day, and at Katikati on Monday next The honorary fire blight inspectors recently appointed bv the Agricultural Department have commenced their duties in connection with inspection of fruit trees within Waihi Borough area. Reports from those who )iave made their initial visit of inspection are such as to point to an entire absence of the fire blight. The Morrinsville Town Board has received advice that the Public Trust Office is unable to find £15,000, the amount required for the central section of tfie drainage scheme. The State Advances Office is now beir& applied to for the money, but the prospects for securing the amount required are not regarded as very favourable.

At a meeting of the Rotorua Cricket Club held last week matches were arranged for every Saturday up to April $ The fixtures include matches at Morrinsville, Matata, Te Puke, and visits by teams representing Tauranga, Matata, Te Puke and Auckland University. The latter team will play two matches at Easter.

Mr B. C. Robbins, leaves for Napier next week to attend the annual conference of Fire Brigades. A team from the Tauranga Fire Brigade will compete at the demonstration.

A retired Oroua farmer, who has worked 12 hours a day for 40 years, has shown the Manawatu Times that upon a net income of £672 he pays out =£22 for Crown land rent, £26 3s land tax, £52 county rates, £22 6s income tax, £75 house rent, £lO borough rate, £l2 lus tire, life, and accident insurance indemnity; total £220, just about 33 per cent. In addition, he pays the Public t rustee £250 for interest incurred in rearing a family.
