CARRIAGE OF APPLES.

SHIPPING FACILITIES IN THE

NORTH.

Water carriage ia admittedly cheaper than any other method. An illustration of this is the fact that the shipping companies' third-class fares from England, including board, is only a little over |d per mile. The value of cheap carriage for fruit is beyond measure.

A saving of only 2d per cass on carriage is equal to £2 per acre per annum on any good bearing orchard; this is 5 per cent on £40 per acre capitalised. In other words, you could afford .to pay £40 more per acre for your orchard if you saved 2d per case in cartage.

The shipping facilities on the Komiti Estate in the Kaipara Harbour are unique. All roads lead to ttaa wharf. No orchard area is more than three miles from the wharf. Steamers call at the wharf for overseas shipment. Snail river steamers take cargo to Helen3ville; launches take loads of 500 cased to Raiigtnui, and thence by rail to anywhere in the North Island.

Irrespective of the enormous saving in coat the absence of long, rough road carting is of great importance. Every bump in the road fa something off the value of a case of fruit. This aspect, often overlooked by tbe beginner at orcharding, obtrudes itself very unpleasantly before tfce otherwise successful orchaTdist whose only way to market is over long and rough roada. "The Fruit Lands cf the North" gives a lot of information on this point. Get a copy free from the Secretary, Box 603, Wellington.

We will shortly publish an interesting article «ntitled "Selling the Apple. Where are the Markets?" 7
