TAURANGA, Octubpr 6tb, 1915. 10 TIMES HEADERS, Moat of you will have noticed the message in last night's paper that the Government had decided to double the charges fur telegrams for newspaper*. To many this is merely a piaeiug event; others will B I realise its significance ; for the newspaper it creates a very serious position. When the war commenced I undertook to issuo the paper daily in order to furnish promptly a brief summary of the important events of the war. An earnost endeavour has boon made to fulfil that undertaking. The cost has been heavy, the response from advertieor and subscriber has been gratifying. But no«v comes the climax, and how the situation is to be met has to be seriously considere 1. Such thoughts as dying an inglorious .death as a daily paper merely present themselves to be rejected. There .is still the same keen demand for war news, and I have still the same desire to furnish it. What then dn be done? Nothing without co-operation. How can we co-operate? Here are some suggestions.. 1. Pay eccounts — especially subscripti m accounts —- promptly. This is a pure matter of business, and has lost none of i c importance In fact it is now ihe first essential in enabling the immediate heavy increased expenditure to be met. 2. Continue to be a'subscriber and paes your copy of the " Times " on to your friend with a suggestion that he ought to take it too. o. If you are titling in your business premises day after day !Him looking to see it arrow without env breath in its body, just consider whether judicious advertising would not ''furnish some much-needed nourishment. I claim that the "Bay °f Plenty Times" is the best advertising medium for you in the district. 4. Kemember that behind the business office of the ll Times " is a printing plant utilised to less than half ita capacity. This plant, in conjunction with an efficient staff, is capable °* turning out work as well, as cheaply, and, when occasion " demands, as promptly as any of you need. Fully utilised, this plant, plus the human element, would just about beo us through this crisis (no idle play on words). I therefore once more sound an appeal for MORE PRINTING ORDERS This appeal will be followed by a personal interview—mean- I - . time think the position over . . , I ■ .■■-.* . - ... . * I Bumuaed up, the position is simply that there is no way of escaping this heaping up of expense. The revenue must therefore bo increased. <}«r advertising charges were increased when the paper was issued daily. One penny may be looked upon as the uoincreasjyble maximum charge for the paper. So we are left with the sole solution— INCREASE THE BUSINESS. We have thl equipment and the staff You have tho need. Blend the two iuto one, harmonious whole, and the increased telegraph chargei will be welcome for the new friendships they will hive created. . . ■■ • * Yours sincerely, W. H.
