DIKECJT SHIPMENTS
In connection with the movement to have Home shipments brought direct to Oisborne- by the ocean liners, the secretary of the Chamber of' Commerce stated at- the last meeting of that body that he had gone round the bigger importers and had ascertained that their imports totalled 5320 tons a year. In addition to this the linns who got their supplies from head offices in , ether towns would (have their goods brought direct to Gisborne if the Home boats would land them there. In reply to a question the secretary stated that when the companies were first) written to on the matter the amount of cargo was stated at 300 tons a month. The chairman thought the information that had been collected warranted the Chamber reopening the proposal with the companies, who might, he said, make a counter proposition' that instead of a monthly service they should have a bi-month'l ly one. Mr O'Meara said he thought Napier had an arrangement for transhipping to be done at a low freight. Mr Anderson said Napier was a main port. Mr Cederwall said only the Tvser boats included Napier as a main port. The chairman thought they could well reckon on 6000 tons a year. Mr Kirk moved' that, the information be passed on to the companies. —Mr Anderson seconded the motion, which was carried. Jf Tauranga had a Harbour Board established", to enable improvements to be carried out to the harbor, we might be in a position t o 'follow i Cisborne's example.
