A meeting of Borough ratepayers was held ir. Mr ■>. U. CnappeU's shop on Saturday evening for the purpose of considering a propose' lo form a ratepayers" association. .In spite t)f the, unpropHious weather a dozen persons. attended, Mr Ohappe.ll being voted to the chair. The Chairman saj.i that a Katepavers' Association was not necessarily^ in opposition to th». Borough Council. Be believed that it should be an adjunct to tha Couiv.-il. and assist the latter in promoting work for the advancement of tho tow it. About thirty years ago he hatl been associated with a ratepayers' association in Portsmouth. At limes, the meetings were attended by the mayor and aldermen/ with the result that the local body and the {iss.-jcioi.ion worked most harmoniously together. An association gave ratepa\'Jl\s an opportunity to have a voice- in x\\a works for Nvhich they had to payU would enable, them to watch the •expenditure of money ami to see that -each part of the liorough received its fair share. Mr Herbert expressed himself as .strongly in favour of the establishment of an association, lie < <miended that the Quarter Acres revolved a very small share of \\w Horough rates and said the bulk c.iMv.e moil ey was spent in Section 1. He advocated more representation on the Council from the Quarter Acres so as to ensure a lair allocation of th« rates for Section IT. Mr Schrieber favoured \nu formation of an association. Mr 'I". Allely suggested that all those present should enrol as members, and this was agreed to. Mr Ohappell proposed—That i\ Ratepayers' Associa! i >:v be established for the JJorou^h of rawrangit — Seconded by Mr Mo-li'Mmmi and '■■•»'•- ried unanimously. Messrs T. Scott, T. MUly. <). K. Alortensen, C. SchreiMer, I>. Hail. l>. M.CKen/ie, P. Herix-rt and -J. HOhappetl wore appointed a rrovisionol Committee, with poaer io add to their number. On the suggestion <J Mr AJIi-ly i( was .decided to hold ni"iiws in the Baml-room and Messrs Al'.ely, Chappell, and Scott were -deputed to make arrangemcais for .se-.-.iring ■ heuse of the room.
