AN EXPLANATION.

Sir Joseph Ward informed the House that the statement appearing in the Press, and wired from Christchurch, that he had given a deputation on the Defence Act Fome secret information, was absolutely untrue. What occurred wa" that a deputation had waited on him to interview him on the subject. He informed them that in view of the fa"t that a no-oconfklence motion was being debated he did not desira to receive the deputation. He did not object to a private chat, and that was all that occurred, and the Press were certainly at liberty to distribute it from one end of the country to the other. There was absolutely nothing secret, and other members of Parliament Were present.

Messrs Laurenson, Robertson and Payne ro?e and bore out what the Premier had said.
