At the meeting of the lU>ruiigh Council on Monday evening the following letter from Mr \V. C. Konsington, Under-Seeretary for Lands, was read: '"In reply to your letter'of the 7th inst., in which the whole position in regard to th > protection and improvement of the military cemetery at Tauranga is so clearly set forth, both in ;-our letter and in the engineer's report and c timate of the cost of taking down ami rebuilding portion of the retaining wall and erecting stone groynes, 1 am glad to be able to inform you that the Right Hon. the Minister of Lands has authorised the expenditure of the sum of £1(52 for the purpose mentioned, and the money can be paid over as .soon as the work has been completed. If, however, you want an advance on the £H>2, you can obtain it on fie certificate of the Crown Lands Ranger, Tauranga, after portion of the work has been carried oht. MrGoudie, superintending nurseryman, at Whakrewarewa, has been instructed to proceed to Tauranga, and advise your Council as to the best method of laying out the cemetery, and he will supply any suitable trees or shrubs that can be spared from the Whakarowarewa Nursery. With regard to the various other matters mentioned in your letter, these are being carefully enquired into, and 1 will again communicate with you at a later date in reference thereto.1'

The Mayor said the letter was very satisfactory. Cr. Murdoch said he saw Mr Goudie last week, but the latter up to that time had received no notice regarding the matter. The Clerk intimated that the Government made an annual grant of C25 towards the upkeep of the cemetery, and a?ked whether he would apply for same. The Mayor and Councillors agreed the Clerk should apply for the subsidy of £25, as previously.
