THE FERRY STEAMER COLLISION.

■ o ' (Per Press Association-) Wellington, April 18. The Nautical Court gave its d:ci aion in the case of the recent' collision between the Duchess and Cobar. The Court held that as tbe two vessels approached each other almost end on each should have made an early and decided movement to starboard. After the Cobar struck the Duchess both proceeded without staying to ascertain if any damage had been done. If the Cobar had had several hundred passesgexs aboard she would have sunk, and an appalling loss of life would have occurred. Tie Court held that there was too much laxity in control of the harbour ferry boats, and masters were not sufficiently on the bridge, but engaged in other duties, such as ticket collecting. The allegations of drunken ness against Captain Jones, of the Duchess, were not proved. Both captains were equally at fault, the casualty being doe to the careless navigation of both. The certificates of Captains Jones and Williams were suspended for twelve months, and they were ordered to share the costs of tbe en* quiry.
