kATIKATI

(From Oir Correspondent.)

The annual picnic in connection with No. 1 and 2 schools was held on

tbe grounds of the Uretara Domain on Friday. The attendance of the

public was below the average on such occasions ; the . weather, however, favourable. It had been in-

tended to have held this gathferin-iJ on the Katikati (Katikati Heads), but, owiiig to the distance and .the gentral state of showery weather so prevalent for some time, it was decided at a meeting he!. y d last Monday, of the subscribers and oarents of the school children, to hold ihe picnic nearer home.

The programme of ' the usual sports and races (including sack races for boys / and girls)- having been. Completed, Mr John Kilieh, J. P., the senior member of the School Committee, in expressing his regret at the absence faf the ohairma'a-'flhrtough indisposition, in a few appropriate words, handed over 50 prize books to the children attending the No. 2 school. ISoma. of they Ijooks were valuable as judged by the standard of cost, but all were valuable by the nature of the.r contents, having 'been selected by th« head-teacher (Mr Boswell) as suitable for each recipient.

It would be almost invidious to refer individually to the many willing hands and minds, all; animated with, one desire, to promote the success of this annual event. 'Mr Boswell had to "discharge -double duty, his assistant (Miss Louise Wilson) being confined to her bed wit-h enteric fever, also her worthy and respected father (Mr John Wilson), but as I jwritfe I ani informed" that the crisis has been passed, though both are still unable to leave their beds. It is almost needless to state; that re.'reshments— both solid and liquidwere dispensed with the most lavish! hospitality in Iruc Katikati style, and during the day the children t and visitors were marshalled fceneath the flagstaff, when our local artist (Mr A. Digglemann) was enabled to take two photos, "copies of which will be .*orw, ard<xl To Mr W. C. Kensingtion, Under-Secrefcary for 'Lands, for? insertion in the annual report on Public Domains submitted to Parliament.

I The proceedings were brought to a final close by a dance in No. 2 rchool, the hall at present being in a state of •demolition, by * the contractors for its restoration, and all retir-ad to their -homes at about) midnigLt, without a single incident to mar the enjoyment of a very pleasant gathering.
