In the perjury caso defendant i,( Conblly) admitted •* havihg told seven distinct lies at the ' Nelson ■ '* trial. Judge Cooper 'said this .was the most extraordinary , trial that had ever taken place in New Zealand, being so full of contradictions.

John Pearce, a witness for the defence, died ' suddenly this niorning. He had been drinking . for, some time and the doctor- was called in last night. "He Intended, to ircmovA patient to the hospital today,, but when being dressed, Pearce suddenly expired. He is said to have been suffering from miners' complaint.
