ONE-SIDED DEVELOPMENT.

In the concluding remarks of an editorial the Poverty Bay Herald (Gißborne) saysr^-The energies of the Lands and Survey and Land Settlement Department seem to have been concentrated upon Taranaki during the past seven years, and the result lias been a wonderful development of the country. New townships have sprung up everywhere, little hamlets have blossomed into flourishing towns, the dairy industry has j been given a lift ahead that has' made it of more, value to the colony than goldmining, , agriculture and other industries have been proportionately "unproved, and generally the district has been made vta boom. As, previously stated, we do not begrudge tie Taranaki settlers their success, but we certainly think it is high time a little more attention were paid to the settlement and development of this side of the island.
