Sm, — In further reference to your letter dated the 22nd ultimo, I am directed to forward to you for the consideration of the • Committee the following particulars regarding the applications revived ixi answer to advertisement for tbe head teaehership of the Harington Street School. Applications were received from twentythree candidates, of whom four are ineligible for the appointment. The names and qualifications of the remaining nineteen candidates are as follows : — 1. Mr Thomas R. Atkinson, aged 24, single, certificate E. 3, has served two and a-half years under tbe Board, and is now teacher of two half-time sohools at Mahurangi Heads, (average *4.) 2. Mr Frank P. Burton, aged 23*, single, (about to be married,) certificate D. 2, has served 7 J years under the Board first as pupil teacher and afterwards in the Training College, is now head teacher of the Mercury Bay school, (average 67.) Testimonials enclosed. 3. Mr James A. Chew, aged 28, certificate D, 4. an English trained and certificated teacher, has not been employed^ by the Board, and is not now engaged in teaching. Testimonials enclosed under separate cover. 4. Mr Francis O. Crooks, aged 27, married, certificate E. 3, nine years service under the Board, and now head teacher of the Paterangi school, Waikato, (average 51.) fc 5. Mr Howard J. T. Ellis, aged 24£, married, certificate E. 3, 5| years' service under Board, now employed as teacher of the Waipu Upper School, (average 37 . ) Testimonials enclosed. 6. Mr James M. French, M.A., New Zealand University, aged 24, single, certificate B. 3, 5| gears' service under Board, and now wnployed as teacher of the Herekino Village Settlement School, (average 38.) 7. Mr John H. Gilles, aged 27|, single, certificate E. 2, Sh years' service under Board, and headteacher of the Waiorongomai School, Te Aroha, (average 83,) trained at Auckland Training College. 8. Mr Alfred Grant, M. A., (Aberdeen and New Zealand,) aged 54, married, certificate B. 1, served under Board for 20 years' as teacher, was last in charge of the Onehunga Boys' School, and resigned that appointment in August 1884, in order to accept the head mastership of the; Waimate District High School, South Canterbury. Jordan said he must not allow any 3 reflection to l)e cast on the Mayor, and must request the Chairman to pall Mr Home to order. Tbe Chairman said he was the only man who could call Mr Home to b order. , Rev, C Jordan said that if the • , Chairman did not do his duty he would . have to remind him of it. 1 Mr Home said be was not ready to 1 say what subscriptions could be got, but would move a resolution later on. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Lundon seconded by Mr Brain, that particulars of the correspondence required by the School Committee at Qpotifci^sent to them, and that the
Committee would beglad to co-operate with them. The Chairman said that they Would i now have to nominate three members l for election on the Board) of Education. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Home seconded by Mr Robson, that j Professor Thomas be nominated. j Resolved, on the motion of Rev. Cr j Jordan seconded by Mr Brain, that Mr Samuel Luke be nominated. MrLundon wished to say, as this Committee had never received anything from the present Board of Edu- 1 cation, he should vote againßt all old J members. j Resolved, on the motion of Mr j Brown seconded by Mr Home, that Mr David Goldie be nominated. The Chairman then laid on the table the report of the prize fund expenditure, and stated that there was a balance of £1 Bs. '.*' Mr Lundon moved the adoption of the report, but it was resolved to hold it over till next meeting. The Chairman said the next business was the appointment of a teacher for No. 2 School, Mr Lundon thought it would bo better to have the Board s letter and the testimonials read. Mr Lobson . wished to know what arrangements had been made with Mr Easton, and did he require 3 months' notice. Chairman said he had seen Mr Easton who promised to attend at 2.30 p.m. Mr Home thought that, while waiting for Mr Easton, they might consider the question of fencing No/ 2 School. Chairman: what .the Board wanted to know was bow much the district would give ten; ards this object. Mr Lundon proposed that the Board be asked to apply to the present owners of adjoining property to assist them. He thought that the cost of, a galvani zed iron fence would be about £14, and that the cost of repairing the present fence would be about £1 10s. —Seconded by Rev. Jordan and carried. Mr Home: Was at No. 2 School the other day, and found that the water in the, tanks had a bad ttfstej and would recommend its being pumped out. Resolvedj on tbe motion of Mr Brain seconded by Rev. Jordan, that a letter be written to the Borough Council asking them to allow the Fire Brigade to pump out the tanks. The appointment of a head teacher for No. 2 School was then considered. Mr Home proposed seconded by Mr Robson, that all applications below D. 3 be struck out. Mr Lundon diet not think this was right, till the testimonials had been read, and moved as an amendment that all below D. 2 be struck out. The Chairman proposed that no names be struck out till after all the |estimonials had been read. Seconded by Mr Brain and carried. The Clerk then read the testimonials of candidates. All were struck out except four, viz., Messrs Alexander Grant, Herbert Mason, Evan R. Lillington, and Frank E. Burton. The Rev. Mr Jordan wished to know whether they could not now consider the applications of the clergymen, vi?., Isey4s. J. W. Alloway, E. Hampden, <Jook, J. Murphy, and Mr Alex. 1 E. Maclintock, whom the Board had struck out as not eligible, some of these , names being on the list of teachers. ! Mr J, Brown proposed that this meeting be adjourned till this day week, and that the secretary be in- , strueted to write to the Board asking why (?rant f IVJason, and Islington were out of employment* Eesolyed, on the motion of Mr Home seconded by Mr Brown, that the Secretary write to Mr Easton informing him of the proposed change, 1 and whether he had any objeption, and whether he would accept the , changed position. The Rev. C. Jordan then seconded [ Mr Brown's resolution which was ( carried, and the meeting separated.
