Wellington, last night. It is understood that Government intends taking steps to permit the natives to deal with their land in their own right, restrictions being imposed as to area. The total amount of insurances on the block destroyed by fire on Sunday amount to £68,426. A deputation of representatives of operative bootmakers from the chief centres, waited on the Commissioner of Custom, praying that the tariff should be increased to 30 per cent. The Commissioner expressed an opinion that the ad valorem system would be most satisfactory. A publican has been fined £5 and costs for permitting a game of hazard.
