COUNTY COUNCIL..

The ordinary menthly meeting of the " ; Tauranga County Council was held in : their chambers on Tuesday last Sept. Ist, at 2 p.m. . Present : — The Chairman (Mr Jon. Brown,) Cra Galbraith, Campney, W. Kelly, and K ; llen. The County, Engineer was also in attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Outward correspondence read and approved. A letter was real from Mrs John Sheehan acknowledging receipt of a letter of condolence. A letter was read from Captain Tuuks re alteration of the number of certain property at Katikati. Referred to the Valuator. A subscription list for a Shaehan memorial was laid on the table. Correspondence was then read from Messrs J. L. Eraser, Dunbar, Johnston, and Department of Justice re refunding the sum of £10 for aceoinodation license for the Taheki hotel. Proposed by Cr Kelly, "that this matter stand over for the present, and that a reply be sent to the Minister of Justice informing him that the ques* tion of the expenses of licensing committee is being considered." Seconded by Cr Carapny aud carried. A letter was then read from Mr Thomas Tanner to the effect that the Engineer thought if the trucks were raised off the ground they need not be removed from Hairini bridge. It was proposed by Cr Graibraith, seconded by Cr Killen, aud carried, "that Mr Tanner be notified that the trucks and rails must be brought to Taurauga aud placed where they were taken from. Mr T. Tanuer further wrote asking that the ground at the south side of his residence be repaired. The Chairman said* that he had spoken to certain residents at Ohinemutu, who stated that there would be no objection to strike a special rate to pay for the repairs of the Otu'uemutu road. Proposed by Cr Kelly, "that Mr T. Tanner's letter be referred to the Eugineer, and that he be asked to furnish a report on the matter. Seconded by Cr Cainpuy. An amendment was then proposed by Cr Galbraith, aud seconded by Cr Killen, "that Mr Tanner be informed that the Council have no funds to make roads at present. „ i The amendment being lost, the original proposition was then put and carried. - ! A letter was theu read from the Surveyor- General, Mr J. M'Kercow. acknowledging receipt of a letter of Bth August, aud stating that the Government does not sea its way to undertake the proposed work of erecting a wharf at the man-of-war anchorage, and forming a connecting road to the, Te Puke rood. A letter was next read from Mr E. G-. B. Moss in behalf of Mr George Shaw, asking the Council to sanction the closing of the road running through his land under Section 9i of the Public Works Act, 1882. Proproposed by Cr Galbraith that the Council cannot entertain the idea of selling road but that Mr Shaw have permission to temporarily close the road in question until required. The Eugineer then read his usual monthly repoi't. No action was taken at the time. Cr Kelly presented a petition on behalf of certain rate-payers, asking that the old Atuaroa road be not closed but kept open and in repair. The petition was renewed and held over for consideration at the next meeting. A letter was read from Mr D. Donovan, re maintenance of roads. The Engineer read an extract from his July report about the matter. Proposed by Cr Galbraith, that the money due to Mr Donovan, for the maintenance of main roads, be paid on the certificate of the Engineer, viz., Section 2, Te Puke road, to 13 July, £41 15s ; Section I, Te Puke road, to Ist September, £7 2a 6d ; Section 3, Te Puke road, to Ist September, £12 15s. Seconded by Cr Kelly and carried. A. letter was next read from Messrs Lundon and Spencer, re the sparrow nuisance. These gentlemen were in attendance to explain the matter and requested that a certain sum be set aside for the purpose of destroying sparrows. Proposed by Cr Galbraith, (seconded by CrOauipny, and carried, that this Council defray the expense of preparing two sacks of poisoned wheat and that the Sparrow Club be intrusted with the work of distribution. Copt not to exceed £10. Mr R. C. Jordon here appeared on behalf of Mr Shaw, re closing road through his property and purchasing same and produced the plan, Mr Shaw agreeing to pay all costs. Proposed by Cr Killen that Mr Shaw's request be granted, he to pay all expenses attending the closing of the road aud that previous resolution passed this day on this matter be rescinded. Seconded by Cr Kelly and carried. Proposed by the Chairman that the sum of £10 be voted towards payment of expenses attending the investigation of the sheep desease. Seconded by Cr Campany and carried. , The notice of motion, standing in Cr Lee's name, re closing Corbett's road, lapsed ; the mover not being present. The Engineer's report was next considered. Proposed, by Cr Galbraith, seconded by Cr Killen, and carried, that the Engineer be authorised to repair the Waitikohi bridge in terms of his report. | The notice of motion, standing in , the name of Cr Kelly, was proposed

by him, viz., That in future the meetings be held at 11 a.m. It was agreed that this matter stand over for next meeting. '"■:-■ The Engineer was instructed to notify Mr Earl, contractor for the' maintenance of a portion of the Katikati road, under Clause 7 of the general conditions, "That unless certain work is done to the road, the road will be taken over by the Council. Cr Galbraith proposed, that a letter be written to the Survey Department requesting that the road from Maketu joining the Tauranga-Maketu road near the Kaituna bridge be surveyed and gazetted ; as also a portion of the road between Maketu and Rotorua which is not surveyed, viz., between Kaawa (The Willows) and Maketu. It was resolved on the proposition of Cr Galbraith, seconded' by Cr Campny, that the Inspector of slaughter houses in this county receive the maximum scale of fees in accordance with Section 34 of the Slaughter House Act, 1877. Proposed by Cr Galbraith, that au application be made to' the Marine Department requesting the Government to put on'the Stella and dredge out a channel at the Narrows- at a place suggested by the Pilot, to enable 11 feet of water to be obtained at low tide. Seconded by Cr Campny and carried. Proposed by the Chairman, and seconded by Cr Killen, that this council sees no necessity for dividing at present and records its protest against having a new county formed from it called the Thermal Springs County, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Hon. Colonial Secretary for transmission to the Governor. Cr Killeu in seconding the proposition expressed himself very much opposed to the devision of the County. He thought that the larger the county the more influence thay would have with Government. Cr Galbraith then proposed an amendment, that no action be taken by the Council in this matter. There being no seconder the amendment lapsed. The original proposition was then put and carried. Several accounts were then passed for payment. It was then proposed by the Chairman, that the Financial Committee be authorised to pay Mr Somerrille the i final payment on his contract when the Engineer gives the necessary cert tificate. , Seconded by Cr Killen and carried. 1 It was resolved that the Engineer take action re grass growing on the roads. This concluded the business.
