THE YEAR BOOK OF NEW ZEALAND.
Elsewhere in our columns an advertisement appears announcing the arrival of the Year Book of New Zealand for 1885-6 by G. Y. Stswart. The few opening sentences of the preface embody a description of the contents. "Hitherto New Zealand has only been merged in Australasia, and ! to many has been an unknown land. Admirable as the contributory literature to the progress of New Zealand { has been, there appeared an opening ' and a demand for a year book that | Bhould arrange, even if in a tentative and desultory manner, information connected with the colony npon its Political, Social, Religious, and Educational Institutions, and should be a gazeteer and index to the towns, vizlages, health rasorts, settlements, opening for trade, capital, labour, mining, engineering, industries connected with the soil, railways, steamboat service, patent and other laws, tariffs, stamp duties, and the names, trades, and addresses, of all who transact business between the colony and the mother country." Hence the Tear Book of New Zealand \ ! The work is pleasantly written, and contains much information on a variety of subjects all bearing on New Zealand. It gives a trustworthy account of the natural resources of the country including mining, agriculture, timber, and gum trades, exports and imports, also, a short description of the system . of Government, education, immigration etc., and numerous other mattern of interest to all living in the colony. And last, but by no means least in importance, the price is moderate.
[The Ed'tor is desirous of affording every reasonable facility :"or the discus&ion o" public subjects, but it n- jlsfc be distinctly understood that he is in ro way responsible -.Tor the opinions expressed by correspondents.]
