VOLUNTEER SERVICE

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I hope you will not consider that 1 am encroaching on your valuablo space by drawing attention to tho above subject. Though I am not now a resident of your beautiful district, I nevertheless take a great interest in its welfare How is it that there is ho volunteer corps in Tauranga ? Surely there is plenty of muscle and sinew amongst you. I can hardly believe that patriotism does not burn as warm in the hearts of the men of the Bay of Plenty as in any other part of the Colony. Tauranga is altogether undefended" and though at present the Mother Country is at peace with Russia, who can tell when hostilities may not break out. You may, I suppose, reckon on the watchful help of a Government cruiser, but j there is no doubt you ought to hare amongst you trained men to repel an invading force. The only difficulty, should a corps be raised, would, be the election of officers, Taurnnga being noted for her captains. Denr Sir — I will conclude this scrawl of mine with tho hopo that it may awaken the military ardour of some' amongst you who have seen service j under tho British Flag.— I am, &c., An Englishman. Masterton, May 25, ISBS.

Skiu. in the Workshop. — To do good work the mechanic must have good health. If long hours of confinement in close rooms have onfeebled his hand or dimmed his sight, let him at once, and before some organic trouble appears take' plenty of Hop Bitters. His system will bo rejuvenated, his nerves strengthened, his sig-ht become clear, and tho whole constitution be built up to a higher workiug condition. • Read •
