TAURANGA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held on Tuesday, 4th instant, at 10 a.m. in the Con cil Chambers. Present — Crs J. Brown (Chairman), Wrigley> Killen, Crump, SnodgrasS) and Chaytor. £he minutes of the last meeting were read. Cr Wrigley took exception to the name Timi Waata in resolution made by him on the minutes. Anaha te Eahui was the name which lie gave in, and was the name of the man who did the work. The Engineer said Timi Waata was the contractor. Cr Wrigley submitted thafc the minutes should be A record of what transpitedj and the name given at the meeting was Anaha te Eahui. If the money was paid to him tlure would be no further trouble. He would undertake to protect the Council as far as the £25 was concerned. The minutes were confirmed, Cr Wrigley voting against* Cr Chaytor said it was understood that the name should be that of the man who took the contract, and he was the only person, the Council could recognise; JAnaha te Eahui did the work, and an order might be obtained from Kingi Waata to pay the money to him. The Chairman ruled the Council could not recognise Anaha except through an order from Kingi Waata. Outward correspondence was read and approved. A petition was received and read re the deviation of the Te Puke road-, asking that it should not be carried out. Or Chaytor proposed, and Cr Killen seconded, that receipt be acknowledged, and the petitioners be informed that the Council are not in a position to grant the request contained in their petition. Proposed by Cr Wrigley that tenders be invited for hauling stone metal on the Te Puke road, tenders to be opened that day fortnight by Cr Wrigley and the Chairman. Carried. j Captain Turner's report was- read i before his leaving the office of Engineer, j Cr Snodgrass moved a vote of thanks to Captain Turner for his able report. Seconded by Cr Chaytor, and carried nem con, The question of deviation was then discussed until the meeting adjourned at 1 p.m. for lunch. i At 2 p.m. thte Council fe-aSsembHsdj the, same, member^ being present. This Chairman, said that he had seen Mr Brabant, who had spoken, to the natives through whose land this deviation of the road at Te Puke was to run, and they had stated that they would be agreeable to the land being taken provided they have time allowed them to remove their crops and that they are paid for the land. They also desired to be employed on the works if possible. Eesolved, on the proposition of Cr Wrigley, seconded by Cr Crump, that in the event of any tenders being accepted for work to be done under the Eoads and Bridges Construction Act, that they be accepted with the proviso hat the contractor shall have no claim tor damages against the Council if any f nf oreseen obstacle arises. Proposed by Cr Chaytor, seconded by Cr Killen, that a solicitor be employed to make the necessary agreement with those interested in the land through which the deviation of the road between Tauranga and Te Puke passes for conveying the land necessary for the road to the Crown. Carried. Proposed by Cr Killen that a special meeting of the Tauranga County Council be held on Wednesday, March 12, for the purpose of making a special rate, in accordance with section 12 and in terms of section 55 of the Eoads and Bridges Construction Act, of onesixth of a penny in the £ on the rateable value of the Special Eating Districts comprising the Eidings of Maketu and Eotorua and that portion of the Waimapu Eiding east of the Waimapu Eiver, and one-eleventh of a penny in the £ in the Special Eating District comprising Katikati Eiding ; the period to commence the Ist day of March, 188-1, and the roll to be published on the Ist day of March in every year during the term of ten years ; the first paymei.it to be made Ist March, 1885. Cr Wrigley proposed that necessary action be taken for the purpose of obtaining a further loan under the Eoads and Bridges Construction Act, to be apportioned as follows: — Main road from Judea bridge to County boundary at Katikati, £1,750 ; Oropi road, £750 ; Kaimai road, to include erection of new bridge, £1,500 ; Te Aroha, £1,000 ; total, £5,000. Seconded by Cr Chaytor and carried. Proposed by Cr Wrigley that the services of the County Engineer be retained until the next ordinary meeting, at the same scale of salary. Seconded by Cr Snodgrass, and carried. Accounts were passed for payment,

subject to the approval of the finance Committee. A notice of motion standing in Or Killen's name was hell over to next meeting* Tile following notice of motiou was given by Or Wrigley : — " That this Council at its next meeting rescind the resolution passed on the 25th November, 1883, with reference to dispensing with the Engineer's services, and placing the surfacemen under the control of the Oouncilloi'B of their respective districts," This concluded the business.
