SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

I We! regret to say our Esteemed fellowtownsman, Mr J. B. Jackson, met •with "a serious accident yesterday, whioh \ull probably confine him to the house ioi some little time to come. He was risng in company with Mr R. 0. Jordan and Captain John Macjpherson, the latter of whom was leading a heavy draught mare belonging to Mr James Esdaile, of Waipapa. They were proceeding in the direction of Mr Macpherson's farm, but when just beyond the finger-post at the junction iof the Katikati road, the mare suddenly let out with her heels. Her ' near hoof just struck Mr Jackson above the ancle of the right leg. Immediately on being struck he uttered a sharp cry of jmin, and although stoically suppressing all signs of emotion, it was evident he was painfully hurt. He was conveyed to Mr E. 0. Jordan's residence, and there made as comfortable as possible till the arrival of Dr jArmitage, who, on. inspecting the injury, at once j>ronounced the small "bone of the leg to be broken. Wo -understand Mr Jackson lately became .a member of an Accident Assurance •Company.*" After paying his premium, le in due course received the rules and principles of the Association, and on reading them through doubts began to iise in his mind as to the advisability of the step he had taken. He wrote to Auckland asking for his premium to "be returned, but the reply he got "tf as that the Association rules and principles had been approved of by all the intelligent portion of the community, and that they should decline to annul the arrangement. On this the matter ceased, and Mr Jackson now becomes entitled to the sum of £3 per week until he is able to return to his ordinary duties. It is fortunate for Mr Jackson that he took the precaution to obtain a policy against accidents, and we trust he may not be long before he is about again.
