KATIKATI STEAM MAIL SERVICE

We understand that the Post-Master General has offered the Rowena and Staffa Steamboat Proprietary the following subsidy for running a steam launch between this port and Katikati during a period of three years, i.e., £200 for the first year, £150 for the second year, and £125 for the third year. The tender of the company was £200 per annum for three years, a sum which appears most moderate in every sense. We trust that the Government will not insist in the reduction in the amount of the subsidy indicated by the PostMaster General ; the paltry saving effected being but £75 for the whole three years. It is not by such cheese paring, economy is manifested, aim we think Government recognising this fact, will re-consider the Post-Master General's offer.
