THE Bay of Plenty Times.

"THE SPWIT OF THE TIMES SHALL TEACH ME SPEED." KIN<; JOHN, ACT IV. ' Wednesday, December 19, 1877. - - * ■ f In our last Wednesday's issue ; we drew attention to the false telegrams transmitted from Tauranga to some of our contemporaries : oddly enough,, the Evening Post of the 3rd instant, . comments in like manner on a telegram to the New Zealand Times, emanating from Tauranga, and referring to the recent obstruction to surveys in the Ohinemutu neighbourhood. We happen to know that the " Own Correspondent" of the Neio Zealand Times is identical with the "Own Correspondent" of the Herald and Axickland Star,, whose telegrams, as we pointed' out last Wednesday, are, for the most part, mere lies. : .The telegram... the Post refers tois as follows :~ Erom "Own Correspondent"— Tauranga, „ .. Tuesday : — The natives of Rotorua atiribute the recent obstruction to the surveys to. the action, of Mr Marc, the district officer, who, as they allege, insisted on trig stations being erected before, any other work was proceeded -with by the suveyor.. This policy was anta- . gonistic to that of tho natives, who -requested _~ Athat all. the small sections, at Ohmemtftja 1 ;. "f , _nfght be surveyed and. afterwards connected 1 A ■"; by trig., . new sphere of duty ; and the Arawa people are not to be- played with.— N.Z. Times. The remarks of the Post on the above are as follow ;— The " Own Correspondent" of our morning contemporary, in a recent sensational telegram, endeavoured to bring discredit on Captain Mair, district officer, of Rotorua, on account of . some native obstruction to thetrig survey in that part of the country. We, .learn on the best, authority, that Captain Mair has only given, effect to instructions from head-quarters, rendered absolutely necessary* by the new system- of triangulation nowbeing introduced, by the Surveyor-General r The natives must agree to the trig stations", or they must be contented to go without a survey of " their small sections at Ohinemutu.' ' The "blundering hand" of the Times' s correspondent iii this instance, is too wellknown ; and the- attempt to gratify a little personal spite at the expense of truth is too transparent to do any harm .Captain Mair is known to be a very able and efficient officer, and has always been immensely popular with the Arawas, whom he led through many a plucky affair during the late war. The published despatches, give ample proof of this, if any were needed. We all know that personal valor is almost worshipped by the natives, and the sobriquet by -which Captain Mair is known amongst them, shows their esti«tetion of his character far better than a litjJß senseless opposition to his trig- survey.
