Drainage and Flood Damage.
WHO CUT THE DRAIN AT SPRINGFIELD ? A lengiihy report was submitted at last Wednesday's meeting 'regarding the above question (already dealt with in the report of the deputation which waited upon the Bruce County Council). The Mayor reported on the results of that conference. He remarked that the membei'3 for Tokomairiro Riding were endeavoring to bluff the Borough Coun* cil, and were evading tho main points. Cr Russell had gravely assured them "It was all. there !" in, the Borough Council's minutes of 1878 to 1880 as to who cut the drain near the English Church cemetery, Springfiald road. He (the Mayor) had carefully examined the Council's minutes from 1870 to 1881, and there was not the slightest reference lo constructing this drain. A glance at the list of those persons constituting the Borough Council during that period was a sufficient guarantee that they would not sanction work being done outside the borough boundary unless same was au-< thorised in the minute?, j Continuing, the Mayor remarked that Mr Sahuond was evidently under a ruis* apprehension —(in his letter to the Bruce Herald) in asserting that the drain was cut by the Borough Council. The only inference he (the speaker) could deduce was that Mr Goodall, in addition to his position as mayor, was also a member of ihe defunct Tokomairiro Road Board, which was merged into the Bruce County Council, There must have been a mix* up in recollections of Mr Goodall's public positions. The report was adopted, on motion of tho Mayor, seconded by Cr Hifcchon. The former Bub«comtnitteo was again appointed to confer further with the sub-committee from Bruce County Couu« cil at its next meeting,
