Milburn-Clarendon Notes.
, —,—<»♦ (From Our Own Correspondent). A. unique happening in this district is to be recorded. Two well-known resi* dents |(Mesßrs James Grey and A. P, Grey), who have lived all their lives in the district, and both sold their farms within a few days of each other, were both farewelled the same week. Last Wednesday evening a large numi ber of residents assembled at "Burnbrae " to say farewell to Mr and Mrs James Grey and Miss Grey. Mr W, J. Lawrence presided, and after music, song and story, the Chairman explained the object of the gathering. Mr and Mrs Grey were well known and esteemed. Mr Grey had been a member of school committee for years, and Mrs Grey bad been a great 'help in cases of sickness, and a loyal member of the church choir, On behalf of residents of the district he presented them with a handsome marble clock, and Miss Grey with a pretty gold brooch. Words of appreciation and good wishes were also spoken by Mr Cawley and Mr W, T, Brabyn, Mr Grey, in returning thanks on be« half of himself, wife and family, referred to some of his experiences in farming, A few years ago things were very dull in the farming line* He had sold oats at 10£ d per bushel and wheat at 2s 4d. He thanked the friends for their kind words and for their good wishes. Mrs Grey in a capital speech said that they had purchased a houße in Milton, and she would make her "At home " always on a sale day, and extended a cordial invitation to all to call on her. She believed the McGregor family who were coming in their place would more than fill the gap they were making in leaving.—After a refreshing oup of tea and more music a.very hearty function closed with Auld Lang Syne. During the evening musical and elocutionary items were aooeptably given by Mrs Somerville. Mrs Grey, Miss Alexander, Messrs J. Wisely and the silk-hatted twins, Jim and Joe. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. McLeod, M. Finch and A. M'Kechnie.
On Saturday evening nearly 40 persons assembled at " Runneymede," Clarendon, to say farewell to Mr and Mrs A. P. Grey. Mr H, Strutherslpresided, and, after several songs and musical items, referred to the impending departure of the guests of the evening. Mr Grey had been one of the leading public men of the district, and had made a very able chairman at many functions. He had given the land the Clarendon hall was built on free to the district, and had been an active member of the Hall Trustees, School Committee, Patriotic Committee, and Cemetery Trustees. Mr and Mrs Grey were very good neighbors, and their departure was a loss to the district. Messrs J, Brabyn, W. 3. Lawrence, j and W. T,'Brabyn also spoke, and the Chairman, on bel alf of the district," made the presentation, consisting of a handsome silver-mounted oak Bnlad bowl and a travelling rug. Mr Grey, in a short speech, returned thanks for the presents, and also for the good wishes expressed. During the evening songs and musical selections were given by Misses Alexander, 0. Lawrence, I. Knight, D. Knight, Messrs W. J. Lawrence, J, M'Grouther, F. Alexander, and Wj T. Brabyn, and the Binging of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem closed a very sociable gathering.
