Lovells Flat.

(FliOJl OUK OWU COKftESPONDENT.) Winter is again here, and everyone is growling about the mud and slush. Ploughing is at a standstill, the ground being too wet. A number of farmers have left the stubble and started their lea paddocks. A concert in aid of the Sunday School funds was held in the Presbyterian Church on Friday evening, May 27th. There was a large attendance, considering the disagreeable weather. Songs and recitations were given in abundance, chiefly by the Sunday School children. An apology was received from Mr Urqnhart, superintendent, who was unable to be present. This gentleman deserves credit for thy way he is conducting the affairs of the Sabbath School, and it is to be hoped that parents will endeavor to fend their children regularly, and recompense him for the trouble he is taking. Another entertainment, in aid of the School • Committee's funds, entitled " A Night with the Boors," w.i< given on Saturday evening, the 4th mat., dy trouper Waldie, assisted by our siation master, Mr Pearson. There was a large Attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Besides the lecture a number of selections were given on the phonograph. I see our worthy pastor, .Mr P. B. Fraser, has been giving vent to his grievances at the ; Licensing Committee meeting held in Milton. I hope Mr Fraser is now done with the question, as his congregation have had plenty of prohibition to do them for some months to come. Considerable time is lost at the Lovells Flat station by the morning and evening trains from the city, owing to the drivers and firemen having to change engines. It means sometimes four or five minutes at the least. I think the old way of working was much better" for everybody. . '. ; : ■ •' A number of residents of the district hove been laid aside of late with the influenza, among others is our school . mistress, Miss Dunlop, who has been unable to leach school for over a week, and bur blacksmith, Mr Gillies, who has also been off work for a few days. . An inebriate from Kaitangata happened to * get off the late train from Dunedin on Saturday evening, only to find that he had got off at the wrong station and had a lovely ten miles to walk home* He will know better next time,
