Obituary
Mr Mark Scott, who died at Hopefield, Tokomairiro, on the Ist August, 1898, in his 72nd year, was born at Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland, on the 24th March, 1827. He enlisted into the 72ad Highlander at Edinburgh on the 30th December, 1845, when nearly 19 years of age. Hia service record was Gibraltar, Ist December, 1846 ; Barbadoes, 15th March, 1818 ; Halifax, Nova Scotia, 20vh July, 1851 ; Dublin, 24th October, 1854 ; Malta, sth January, 1855; Balaclava, llth June, 1855 ; present at capture of Sebastopool, Bth September, 1855 j Portsmouth, 31st July, 1856 ; Bombay, 10th December, 1857 ; present at capture of Coutab, 31st March, 1858 j engaged with the rebels, 14 h July, 1858 j discharged ab Mhou, India, 313t May, 1861. His discharge bore conduct very good, two good service badges. He also got two Crimean medals (one being the Turkish) and one Indian medal — all with clasps. He served over 15 yeara. The circumstance of his discharge was the off< r of the authorities, after the mutiny was suppressed, tbat any desiring their discbarge would receive it. Tbis gave no pensions, but on account of his good service badges be was entitled to a deferred pension, which he received from the date of reaching fifty years up to tbe time of his death. By agreement with the authorities he received a free passage from India to Tasmania, where he had two brothers. He came to New Zealand in September, 1861 — the early digging days. He settled in Tokomairiro, and on 27th March, 1562, was married to Isabella, second daughter of the late George Brown, of Elderlee. In 1866 he settled on his own land on the west side of the plain. He leaves a widow and a grown up family of three sons and a daughter to mourn their loss. When the Bruce JEtifles was started iv 1864 be was one of the promoters, and under date 13oh December, 1865, received a commission from Governor Sir George Grey as Ensign, which he held until he left the volunteers. After occupying his own land he took no active part in any public affairs but stuck to hia work and proved a good settler, and waa respected by all who knew him.
