INSPBOrOB'S BEPOBT, The Inspeotor of Worka reported ac follewe on the atate of the roads and works for the month ending 30th July, 1898.— Roads— The unmetalled roads have been out up a good deal sinoe last meeting owing to the continued wet weather. The surfacemen have been engaged ohiefly in putting on maintenance metal on the metalled roads, and they are all in fair oondition. Works— Tho contracts on hand have made fair progress sinoe last renort. The formation contract on the road to Feßtherstone's Akatore, is well in hand, and tbe works at Talert Mouth under Govorment vote are making good progress, one of the contracts being finished. The metal contracts are now finished and the maintenance metal supplied has nearly all been ueed to keep the roads in repair. Several culverts have been repaired since last report and timber has been laid down to repair Salmond's Creek bridge on main road, wbioh ia showing signs of giving way. Some slight repairs have been made to some of the bridges, and some timber has been supplied for repairs to Taieri Bridge, this beiog the first expense incurred since the bridge was built. Waihola Jetty— The beams holding up the planking are in a very bad state. Several of the planks are In the same oondition, and to repair it properly it will require 3500 ft of timber at a coat of £22 155. The approaoh is also partly washed away, and to put it right would oost £3, or a total cost of £25 153 for materials. The labor in connection with putting tbe timber in position would run the whole oost up to £30. Or Crane moved and Cr Murray seoonded "That the works reoommended by the Inspector be oarried out, the coßt to be borne by Waihola riding (£25) and Clarendon Riding (£5).— Agreed to. Drainage to road— The Taieri County Council are erecting banks on their aide of the Waipori river with the result that on the last rise in the river the water was forced on to the Bruoe side and damaged a portion of the road that waß not before affeoted by a rise in the river. He would reoommend that an embankment two feet in height be put on the Bido of the road from Johnson's to Paterßon's gate, a distance of 14 chains, to protect the road and also keep the water from flowing over the low-lyiDg adj«cent lands. All the river bank from the bridge to the lake has been more or lesß protected by banks erected by the property owners, the portion on the side of the road being the only plaoe unprotected from a rise in the river. Ia connection with the above H. L. Johnson wrote Btating that the Waipori River rose and flowed over the road at his gate, and suggested that an embankment b e placed on the road to protect same, and also the adjoning properties from flood watere. Or Clark moved and Cr Haggart seoonded— " That the work on Waipori River protective works, as per Inspector's report, be carried out, and that tenders ba called for Bame."— Carried. The Under-Secretary for Lands wrote stating that the grant required to open up roads through the village settlement at Taieri Beaoh would be considered when preparing the estimates for the current year. — Received. A letter was read from the Hon. A. Lee Smith atatlng that the Minister of Railways had intimated that be would oauee estimate to be made of cost of a siding at Titri. — Received. The Seoretary New Zealand Counties Assooiation wrote forwarding copy of order paper for i's meeting in Wellington on 13sh instant, and asking for any suggestions. — Received. Mr Wm. Noble wrote stating that a meeting of Glenledi Riding ratepayers had agreed to the stopping of a portion of road through section 1, Block I, Akatore Survey Diatriot. . It was resolved—" That the stopping of the above road be confirmed." Mr Wm. Hewitson, wroto stating tbat a meeting of ratepayers of Crlohton aud Mt. Stuart Ridings had agreed to the stopping of roadline between seotions 1, 2, 3, and 4, Blook VIII, and sections part 3, all 4, 5, and 6. Blook 111, and seotions 1, 2, and 3, and part of 4, Block VII, North Tuakitoto Sarvey Distriot, and roadline through sections 1 and 2, blook VII I, and part of ace* tlons 5, Block 111, North Tuakitoto Survey Distriot be stopped, — Agreed to. The Counoil oonfirmed the resolution. P. Craigie and Son wrote drawing the attention of the Counoil to the atate of the road leading to their property. The matter was adjourned till next meeting. Mr John Stephenson, owner of Coombe Hay Estate, wrote asking the Council to do aemething to improve the road down the river side leading to Coombe Hay, as it wa s utterly unfit for ordinary traffic ; and stated that it took him two hours to go three miles with a good pair of horses. MrW. Oroaaan wrote drawing the Council's attention to the atate of the roada on the Clarendon drain, as the water was flowing over part of it daring the laat flood in the oreek. — Received. KAITANGATA PUNT. The Mayor of Kaitangata wrote asking the ConnoU to appoint a deputation to meet the Borongh ConnoU toco aaider the question of replacing the preaent expensive punt with a substantial bridge. Cr .Rutherford aaid the suggestion was a very good one. The punt had been twice sunk during the past 11 yeara aud it oost £60 eaoh time to ralße it. Repairs and alterations were also very heavy. If a good bridge was ereoted at, say, a cost of £2000 it would last for a great many years and the repairs would not be muoh at all. After a little further discussion Or Rutherford moved and Cr Haggart seconded— "Tbat a deputation consisting of the Chairman and Crs Hapgart, Hewltsont Noble, , and the mover be appointed to wait on the Kaitangata Borough Counoil."— Agreed to. On resuming in the afternoon, the above matter again came np, when Cr Rutherford moved aud Cr, Murray seoonded—*' That the Government be asked to grant a subsidy of £ for £ to ereot a bridge at Matau Branoh, Clutha River, if the ratepayers and the Kaitangata Borough Council agree to the erection of a bridge," An amendment by Cr Haggart — That the matter stand over till nett meeting " lapsed for a want of a seconder. The motion on being put was loßt on the voices. AN HILSIDE PETITION. A petition was presented from 22 ratepayers in Hillend subdivision, Balmoral Riding, asking that all the funds of the riding be expended in a oontinuation of the metalling on Bsgg's track and part Bishop's to j )in present metal. The lettor od closing the petition stated tbat all the ratepayers in the district signed it with the exception of those who signed the petition presented at last meeting for a road up river Bide. ..-.-'•■ Cr Haggart moved and Cr Clarke seconded — "That in the absence of Cr Smith the consideration of the petition be postponed until next meeting. — Agreed to. GENERAL AND SEPARATE KATES. In accordance with notice of motion Cr Murray moved — " That the Council make and levy a general rate of |d in the £ over all the outlying districts within the Couoty» and a general rate of fi ia the £ over all road and river distriots within the County, and also a separate rate of § i in tbe £ ov er the Matau outlying district — such rates to be for the period commencing Ist April, 1898, and ending 31st Maroh, 1899, and to be payable to the collector in one instalment on 20th August, 1898."— Seoonded by Cr Haggart and carried. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID HATES. In accordance with notice of motion Cr Murray moved — "That the Counoil make | and levy a general rate of tbree- sixteenths of a penny in the £ over all the County of Bruce, to pay the charges of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards — suoh rate to be for the period commencing lat April, 1898, and ending on 31at Maroh, 1599, and to be payable in one sum on 20th August, 1893." — Seoonded by Or Haggart and oarried, SPECIAL BATES. Cr Mnrray moved and Cr Haggart seconded — " That the ConnoU make and levy all the various speoial rated over all the drainage and workß districts within the County for the same period as In the other rates. — " — Carried. The -ratebooks were then signed by three j members of the Counoil. NOTICE OF MOTION. j Cr Smith sent in notioe that he would movent next meeting — "That a committee i be appointed to take into consideration the best means of altering the various ridings j so as to give a fairer representation, as in the meantime Balmoral with only one member had almost aa much rateable value ! as four of the other ridings with four members, whioh is anything but fair to the Balmoral Riding ratepayers." TENDEBS. The tenders for the following works were then opened and dealt with as follows : — Contract No. 495— Cutting ditoh at Stirling. None reoeived. Fresh tenders to be called. Contraot No. 496— Embankment on road at Stirling. One tender was reoeived but as it waa far too high, it was deoided to oall for fresh tenders, to be referred to the inspector and , member for the riding. Contract No. 497 — Embankment on road at Inoh Clutha. George Logic, £23 9a2d . Thoe. Boyd, £20 10s ; Joo. Bell, £24. Cr Hewitaon moved and Cr Rutherford seoonded — " That Mr Boyd'a tender at £20 10s be accepted."— Carried. Contraot No. 498— Snrfaoing roada Matau Riding. One tender was reoeived, but it was too high. No aotion was taken. Contract No. 499— Cutting faoines, Matau Riding. No tenders reoeived. It was resolved to hold the next meeting of the Counoil on Tuesday, 4th Ootober. This oonoluded the business.
