"BY YOUR OWN CONSESSION YOU ARE A THIEF.
A piisoner was arraigned at an Assize Court in one of the back-country towns of this colony recently for stealing a horse, and in reply to the usual question, "Are you guilty or not guilty?" he pleaded " Guilty." His counsel turned to him and said, "You fool, 1 told you to plead 'Not Guilty,'" whereupon he withdrew his plea and pleaded "Not Guilty." He was tried and found " Not Guilty," whereupon the presiding Judge said : "Prisoner at the bar: By your own confession you are a thief, and by the verdict of the jury you are a liar. You are discharged ! '
