Dolls of High and Low Degree.
Dolls as playthings existed many, many hundreds of years ago, and they have been owned by tho children of nearly every nation. The little Roman mnidon, whose father lived in a marble palace, possessed a doll made of ivory. Its limbs wore jointed, and it would bo a costly article to purchase nowadays. Her poorer sister would have her dolly fashioned from bono, Its features would be roughly carved, but no doubt Its owner loved and cherished it just as much as tho rich child her beautiful doll of ivory. Among colored races dolls aro much prized as playthings, and the littlo African child, for want of anything bettor, takes a block of wood, to nurse and play with. A lady who traveled much in Africa tells of the unspeakable joy and prido of a small black girl of 7 to whom sho presented a big rag baby, tho novelty of its complexion being somowhat different from her own only appearing to add to Its valuo.
