WINTER EVENING ENTERTAINMENTS.
There was a very good attendance of ladies a.nd gentlemen at the meeting, called by advertisement for Wednesday evening, to consider the desirability oC giving a series of entertainments during the winter evenings. The Mayor was called to the Chair, and it was resolved to appoint a general Committee of those present, and to hold the entertainments once a month. For the purpose of making all necessary arrangements, the following gentlemen were appointed a Sub-Committee: Messrs John Grant, W. Taylor, F. Twiss, F. Bastings, James Reid, A. McDonald, Donald Reid, and Stephen Clive — four to form a quorum . Mr Twiss kindly consented to act as Treasurer, and the Rev. W. Ronaldson undertook the duties of Secretary and Convenor of meeting?. One of the objects for which these entertainments are to be given is the formation of a fund for local benevolent purposes, it being pretty evident that we shall feel the need of it in Milton before the end of the winter.
The Revs. J. Chisholm and W. Ronaldson, together with the Mayor, were appointed a Committee for the purpose of distributing any necessary relief. The Sub-Committee met immediately afterwards, when it was resolved to hold the first entertaiment on Friday the 25th instant, and I during July and August, alternately with those to be given at the Tokomairiro High School, uuder the direction of the Rector. The charge for admission was fixed at Is, children half price, and the Secretary was requested to write to the Bruce Rifles, asking for the use of the Volunteer Hall free of charge. It was arranged to hold the first practice this evening at the Rev. Mr Donaldson's House. A long list of names of ladies and gentlemen was made who would assist either in singing, reading or reciting, and on the motion of Mr John Grant, seconded by Mr W. Taylor, Mr Francis Grant was appointed to conduct the 1 singing and music throughout the series of entertainments. This was consented to by Mr Grant, and some very pleasant evenings may be looked forward to during the winter months.
