The Auckland Timber Company has resol veil to increase their capital by issuing 12,000 shares. Napier, October 1. A. fire broke out; at the Spit at Napier at 1 o'clock this morning, and destroyed the premises of Mr Benker saihnaker, and Mr Kedward's store and engine shed. The progress of the fire was Btayed by the Spit and Napier Fire Brigades, Benker was insured tor £650 in the Union Office, £400 on the furniture, and the remainder on the buildings. Hokitika, October 1. The Christchurch coach has just arrived, after eight days' journey. The driver reports that all the rivers were heavily flooded. The coach was upset in one river and three horses were drowned, and the passengers liad a narrow escape. The Chief Justice and the Judge's Associate, and other passengers are still at Oass, and will not reach here before tomorrow night. Some of the passenger's luggage is lost, but the mails arrived safe. Christchurch., October 1. The r epairs to the Ran^itata bridge are expected to be completed by to-morrow. Through traffic from Christchurch to Duuedin was resumed to-day. The passengers on the arrival of the train at the bridge left and J crossed on foot, afterwards transferring themselves into the train at the other end of" the bridge. October 2. At the meeting of the Synod last night, the Committee was appointed to Establish a Temperance Society similar to that iv connection ' with the Church of England. To day a Committee was appointed to watch any Education Bill that may be introduced into tba House before the next meeting of the Synod. The project of cutting a channel through die railway lino at Irishman's Flat was not carr'ed out. The water is now gaing down. A tire took place last night on the premises of Mr Merrip, of Kaiapoi Island, and did damage to the extent of £170. There was no insurance.

kt the meeting of the Charitable Aid Board it was resolved that no girl should be allowed to leave the Orphanage for service under of 12 years. It was stated that a letter had been forwarded the Govurnment, asking for a sum of money to be placed on the Supplementary Estimates for the purchase of a piece of land, so as to make the institution self supporting. If application were granted, the Orphanage would be converted into a Home for destitute.

At a meeting of the Rifie Association it was resolved to fire a match with Otago at the end of November or the beginning of December and that the number on each side be 15 ; D shots at 200, 500, and 600 yards ; that the C. R. A. rules be adopted. The Council of the Association will select the Canterbury men.

A man lamed Stanton, for being illegally on the preuiaea of the ELon. Wm. Robinson, received a month's imprisonment ; for burglary aud stealing £100 worth of stamps the same prisoner was committed for trial. Oamabu, October 2. James Mitdiell, surveyor, who for some time past has been engaged surveying at Hakateraraea, Vas drowned yesterday in one of the overflowaof the Upper Waitaki river. He was riding djwn to North Waitaki railway station, accompanied by another gentleman, who was Iriviug a buggy. Going through one of the overflows, the latter gentleman becani^ alarmed. Mr Mitchell then took the bugiy, giving his horse to hia companion, but th» bug«y soon afterwards I overturned. Mr Mitchell being unable to swim, was drowned*. The other gentleman was washed off his lorse, but, being a good swimmer, was enabled to reach land. Mr Mitchell has two brokers iv this district.
