The Levy Concerts in Melborne.
The ' Argus' of sth November says :— The Concert belonged lo the high class. The audi-
eace was distinguished for ite gpod taste from? -the mere fact of its being present. Mrs Levy, the debutante, must take precedence of all others. She sang for ' her first selectiou '•Robert tot qvie j'aime." The subject is so veil known among musical people, that there is no need to describe the performance in detail. If we say that she sang it perfectly, we do her simple justice only. The voice was ample and sweet, "the in teiligen'ce was vivid and without constraint, and (he musical phrasing was eloquence without words. Upon the operatic stag* she would be the typical " Isabella" for whom Scribe wrote and Meyerbeer made.his music Mrs Levy held herself freely ; she sang grandly, and made that claim to public favour which must be hers whether'now or in vthe time to come. We prefer to treat Mr Levy as one . who is not yet properly ; recognised/ Be, seems .- not tp Jbave, taken .to the cornet a piston as am instrument intended for his own uses, but to have invented new uses^for the instrument. Amongst the great composers of the )a3t and the present' generation no one has written expressly for the cornet'; but Mr Levy plays everything, from Beethoven down to De Beriot and Kucken, and plays in such style as to make other instrumeutalists sorry that they cannot produce the same powerful and truthful effects. . His selections last night' were a ''Hungarian air," with variations. Schubert's " Aye Maria r " and " The Maud Waltz." It is not necessary that we should name all the encore pieces which were demanded after these five performances. It is certain, that those who were present did justice to the great artist, and it is equally certain that those who were absent missed a great treat. Miss Pitts was -worthily associated in this concert. Signor Kosnati used his magnificent tenor voice with grand
effect, and ;Signor Giorza, as pian iforte solo player aid- kceomanyist, gave an artistic tone and 'complete fiiiisb to the whole . eritertain-
