GAR'D GRASS IS ILL TO GROW.
The world is wide, an' mony path 3 Gang windin' ower't by land an' sea, An' ilka man may choose his am, Aa freely as the air for me, An' if some dinna choose the best, We canna gar them dot, I trow ; A gude auld word,|jbaith wise an' kind,^ Says " Gar'd grass is ill to grow." There's mony, mony paths,"an', J yet Nane e'er wa3 ither made§to mar ; An' everybody kena his am, Where conscience shines — a guidin' sbar, Each has a licht that sares himsel— The thought that fills his am bit pow ; I wouldna°gar ye rule by mine, For " Gar'd grass is ill toggrow." Yet when our licht is burnin' dim, Or mists are gatherin' darkly roun', We needna scorn a friendly ray, An' nane should grudge that simple boon ; But if some like their am wee spark Far better than your shinin' lowo, Ne'er force them forrit to the glare, Mind " Gar'd grass is ill to grow." Some een there are that canna thole The brichtness of the mid day sun ; An' whiles it only makea them waur To keep them in the licht they shun. Fair freedom aye seems Nature's way, Her motto — " En do as ye dow," An' mind an' matter bear her seal That " Gar'd grass is ill to grow." John Taylor.
