«- . Snider rifles were issued to the "Wellington Volunteers on June 28th ...... The Governor laid the foundation-stone of the new Presbyterian.Church in Willisstreet, Wellington, on Tuesday. A Wellington telegram writes that it is understood that several Banks of the Colony have entered into an arrangement which binds them to adopt uniform rates of interest, discount, &c. The Customs revenue for the port of Thames for the month of June was £1123,. and for the quarter ending 30th June, 1875, £3073. The amount for the corresponding quarter in 1874 was £2650. The General Government paid to the Provincial Government oh Wednesday the capitation money previously withheld at Auckland on account of the interest, on the constructed railways, and to recover which the two Provincial Governments purposed to apply for a mandamus of the Supreme Court. It is reported that the Directors of the New Zealand Ste.am. Shipping Company, are considering tenders from England for the construction of two large steamers, superior in size and power to the Hawea and Taupo, recently built for the Union Company, Dunedin. If they decide upon the acceptance of a tender, the capital of the company will be increased. The Superintendent of Auckland has taken legal advice re the right of the General GoverDmeut to charge interest on railways against capitation. The opinion is from Mr E,ees, the barrister, who says the interest can only be deducted from the Land Fund, and that the action of the Government in holding back the ;capitation is illegal. The Supreme Court at Picton was opened on Tuesday by his Honor the Chief Justice. True bills were found in all the criminal cases. The Grand Jury presented an address of welcome to his Honor, in which they recommended the abolition of grand juiiep, and the transfer of their duties to legally qualified officers to be appointed by Government for the purpose. There is a considerable stir at Auckland i about the street tramways. Mr Turner has sent in an offer to raise a local company if possible ; if not, to obtain the capital elsewhere. He guarantees to construct lines through the city and; suburbs for a monopoly of 21 years, the highest fare not to exceed 4d. A special meeting of the Council is called for Wednesday, to discuss the offer, , It is understood in Wellington that the Minister of Jpstice has prepared, and will introduce early next session, a bill for the consolidation and amendment of the present Stamp Duties Act. Although it is not expected that the amount of the revenue dei ived from stamps will be either increased or diminished by the new measure, it is believed it will simplify the prQce^s : of cftllection •■ of .■ duties, and generally facilitate the transaction of business. 1 At ;oamaru /on. \At a meeting of the T Intercolonial Cricket Committee at Auckland, Bice, the secretary, read correspondence re Australian visit. He stated he had sent a reply to Meares, of Dunedini that Auckland would guarantee £165 towards expenses. The Committee passel the folio wing resolutions :£-"■ That the match should be played at EUerslie, provided the Auckland Cricket Club give the ground on reasonable terms." • ...
