BEAUMONT MEETING.

{To the Editor of the Bruce Kerald.)

In justification of myself from appendix to copy of report of meeting held at Crookston, (from your paper) which stated that they refused to insert anonymous letters, attributing base means of obtaining signatures to petition on part of Mr Beaton, and that had lie appended his own name, instead of cowardly screening himself behind an anonymous &c, &c. The suppressed letter merely stated that; the account of meeting sent by " Correspondent " to ' Tuapeka Times' was a correct one, and perfectly true and impartial, and that the Committee and others who were present, were prepared to vouch for its correctness, it was signed " Another Subscriber," but on the left hand corner of the paper was written ■' boua fide," with name and address. So much then for the virtuous indignation displayed. With regard to the caligraphy of the M.ti. of Ettrick meeting report with that letter, he finds the two are identical. What a wonderful discovery ! At the request of tbe Chairman of Ettrick meeting oji his return from there, 1 made a copy from several pieces of paper he handed, Vie" (and which i have still in my possession), so that he could ge.t it

Inserted in the ' Tuapeka Times.' Nolle of the- Committee >were present, nor to my knowledge had anything to do with .it. With respect to the number of men present at the meeting, that was a matter I knew nothing about— nor had- I any business to enquire; and further, the Chairman of Ettrick meeting was not a member of Beaumont Committee. In writing for the parties,! had no interest in matter, and did not care a brass button which way the thing went j and should any one else require my services and pay me for my labor, « I shall be happy. to do it ; but I cannot allow such an unjust statement to pass unrefuted. Trusting to your kindness to insert this, and not wishing to hide myself behind a screen,— lam,&c, * John Bennett. Beaumont, 13th October.
