Commercial.
A; Merger reports for the week ending July 25,1874, retail prices only — Fresh butter, in $lb and lib prints, best quality, ls lOd per lb Salt butter, ls 6d to ls 8d; and in good demand, owing to the continued scarcity of fresh butter. As the market at present is barely supplied, the grocers have a difficulty in supplying their customers. Cheese, only of the best quality 10d to ls per lb. Side and rolled bacon, lOd to ls per lb : beef ham, 7d j boiled beef ham, Sd ; colonial hams, ls to ls 2d per lb. English hams, ls 5d to ls 6d. —not much in demand, and the market well supplied. Eggs still continue to be scarce, and are selling this week freely at 2s 6d per dozen.
Messrs J and A Maclean report, for the Week ending 25th July, as follows : — Fat Cattle.—There was only a moderate supply at the weekly market on Wednesday, about 70 head being forward, which were all taken by the trade at prices ranging from L 8 to Lll for bullocks, and from L 6 to LIO for cows. We have placed 20 head privately during the week for forward delivery. We quote really prime beef, 27s 6d to 30s per lOOlbs; medium and inferior, 17s 6d to 22s 6d. Fat Sheep.—About 750 of all sorts wer^. penned, 200 of which were turned <. ut unsold ' the balance realising for merino wethers, from 8s 6d to 9s;6d cross-breds, 18s 6d to 19s cd. We have placed privately for forward delivery 1500 cross-breds at full market rates. We quote prime quality cross-bred mutton, 3£d per lb ; do merino, 2f d to 3d. Fat Calves.—A few medium quality were penned, which realised from 20s to 40s each. Store Cattle.—No transactions to report for the week. Quotations are—for good, well grown bullocks, L 3 10s to L 4 10s ; do cows, L 2 10s to L 3 10; mixed herds, 40s to 50s according to quality and breeding. Store Sheep.—On account of the very inclement state of the weather for the last week there has been very little doing in this class of stock. We hare sold a lot of 2 tooth half - bred ewes at 13s 3d each. We quote halfbred ewea 1.3s to 14s ; wethers, 10s to 12s ; lambs, 7s to 8b ; merino wethers, 6s to 6s 6d, f ullmouthed ewes, 53 to 5s 6d. Wool and Sheepskin*.—We will hold our next sale in the beginning of the week, when we will offer several odd lots of wool and a large number of sheepskins. Hiles continue in request. We have sold —privately— duiing the week 100 medium weights at 10s 6d each. Grain.—Wheat quotations are without change, viz: —Prime samples, 4s 6d to 4s 9d, medium and inferior, 4s to 4s 4d. Oats remain firm at from 4s 4d to 4s 6d for prime milling [samples ; good feed, 4s to 4s 3d. Prime malting samples of barley are saleable at from 5s to 5s 3d ; medium ai.d inferior, 4s to 4s 6d. We have placed several lots during the week at above quotations.
Messrs M'Landbess, Hepbuen, and Co. gold by auction on Friday, the leases, for the term of 21 years, of three Corporation properties. Dunedin :— Lot 1. Being allotment 2 of section 20, block XV., and having a frontage of 66ft. to Stuart street, was. sold for L 132 per annum. Lot 2. Being a portion of section 18, block XV., having frontage ot 66ft. to Stuart street, and also a frontage to Cumberland street (as to be extended south of Stuart street), realised L 214 10s per annum. Lot 3. Consisted of section 58, Upper Harbor District (East side), having an area of five acres odd, and was sold for L 6 10s per annum. There was also offered ou account of the Corporation, tee buildings, for removal, of the Auld Scotland Hotel and outhouses, standing on the portion of section 18, block XV., Stuart street, in Mr Fidler's occupation. These brought LIOB. A section and brick house at the corner of York Place and Victoria'street was submitted but the bideingfnot coming up to the owner's expectations, it was withdrawn.
