Hokitika, August 13th. In the National Assembly, M. Thiers declared that the expense of the war was was about three milliards of francs (L120,000,000\ The Budget for 1870-71 shows 'a deficiency of 2,631,000,000 francs (L105,24:0,000). More than douhle the new French loan of one hundred million francs with interest at 5 per cent, was subscribed in one daj, and it is now quoted at 4£ premium. Paris contributed 2^ milliards of francs, the provinces one milliard, and forei^n countries one milliard.
Felix Pyat, one of the principal members of the Commune, is not yet arrested.
The Emperor of Germany has made General Von Roon, a Count, and Count Von Moltke a Marshall.
The German troops in France are united und^r the command of General Manteuffel.
Brussels was illuminated on the occasion of the anniversary of the Pope's accession. The troops were in readiness, owing to the anti-papal manifestations, but nevertheless the crowd broke the illuminated windows. Several arrests were made.
The Porte refused to accept Tricoupi as Greek Minister at Constantinople, in conspquence of his having been Minister of Foreign Affairs during the Cretan insurrection.
The Spanish Ministry have resigned
Great damage has been done to the cotton crops in Louisiana and Arkansas, in consequence of the excessive rains. If is anticipated that the crop will amount altogether only to three and a half million of bales. A considerable rise in the price of cotton has taken place at Liverpool in consequence.
The " National " candidates have been elected in Meath and Westmeath.
The revenue of the Unitpd Kingdom for the second quarter of the year is L875.000 (?)
General Ladmirault has been appointed Governor of Paris. Tbe elections in that citv passed off quietly.
The result of the French elections in the provinces appears to be in favor of the Republicans, who are mostly moderate men. Onlv one-tenth of those returned are Conservatives and Liberals.
The rate of discount is 2£ percent. Con^ sols are at 92^. The total arrivals of wool to the 16th June amount to 105,000 bales. A conference meets at the Westminster Hotel on the 19th t© discuss the relations of England and the Colonies. London, July Bth. Consols are at 93£ ; New South Wales Five per cents., I02£; South Australian Six Per Cents., 110; Victorian Six Per Cent"., 113; do Five Per Cents., 103£. Wool is in active demand. Prices have advanced l^d to Sd, and are still advancing. Copper is at L77. Tallow is firm. Wheat is quiet, and prices are drooping.
