WAIWIRA.

'(From ofifc-wn correspondent.) Now ihat the harvest is nearly over, th 6 district is again asuming its usual state of quietude, though, I may say the traffic oil Main South Road, in this neighborhood has considerably increa ed of late, and the great demand for timber from Tapanui. has something to do with this . The general complaint among the settlers here, is, thafc there is no market; for their stock, as the prices realised at the late sale held here will sufficiently prove, and I venture to assert that if a market in some form or other were only open-id up for the produce of this district, the place would support a population, at least three times the number located here at present. As the case stands there is little inducement to cultivate, or rear more stock than will supply the actual wants of the settlers. What effect the Clutha Railway (when completed) will have on this district, it is difficult to say. Certainly the produce of the neighborhood could then be forwarded to Dunedin, both very rapidly and cheaply ; but would there be a market for ifc when it reached there ? The present population of Dunedin does not warrant a reply in the affirmative. On tho other hand, however, it must be born in mind, thafc the railway will bring th-» Waiwera within little more than a couple of hours journey of Dunedin, and the land is sure to rise in value, and settlers be indue d to reside here, and iv a few years, with the improvements at present, being gone on with such as planting tr3B3. &c , the Waiwera district will present a very different appearance from the rather cheerless aspect it preseuts fco a new arrival •_ I am very happy to state that scarlatina, so much dreaded throughout the Province has never made its appearance here, and T trust never will. The government are about to alter the Main South Road, which, at present. en* croaches considerably on the school reserve, and will thus allow of the grounds belonging to the school being fenced, an improvement very much required.
