ISLAND BLOCK.
($6 ike Editor of the Bnice Herald.) ' Sir,— ln your last week's issue appears, a • report of Mr Macandrew's meeting at Milton, ; in which it. is stated that in reply to a question submitted, to him by Mr Kirbyj Mr : Maoandrew asserted that he believed John ' Beighton, Teviot, was the party to blame in ' + he matter of the sale of the Island Block.; I d.o not intend to occupy your space by a . lengthy denial, but simply to intimate that in making such, an assertion, Mr Macandrew is guilty of a gross falsehood. It is well known that I used my utmost endeavors to . prevent the Island Block being sold, and also that Mr Macandrew caused the land to be ' .sold in defiance of the fact of several parta of . it being in the actual occupation of intending : leaseholders, and also while at same, time holding in the hands of the Governent the monies deposited with them by intending agricultural leaseholders in respect of -appli;< ; i cations for nearly all the block, and with^utl I even cancelling his own proclamation that tfiei r. land was open for agricultural leasing. Mr Macandrew'a re-election must be very uncertain, when he is compelled to make . auoh statements in order to mislead the public. Yours respectfully, John Beighton.
