STREET IMPROVEMENT.

When the business under the heading of "-General",was- being discussed at the meeting of tliu- Borough Council last night, Cr Haines advocated the raising of°a loan for the purpose of street improvement. He said it was about time the town was'put in a state of repair, as inanv of the streets and footpaths were in anything but a creditable condition. .He advocated a poll of the ratepayers, but suggested that beiore doing so it might be wiser to get the engineer to prepare a detailed statement of the streets requiring attention and an estimate of the cost of the work. He strongly urged the necessity of giving High-street some attention, as it was an absolute disgrace to the town, but' if anything was done it should be done on a systematic scale.

The Mayor deprecated a loan.' They had. he said a great deal of heavy expenditure during the- past few years, but lie thought they could now see their way through expenditure, and .if they only had a little patience they would soon be able to do all this work out of ordinary revenue. If they got a loan there was always a tendency to spend it lavishly, and do work that was not strictly necessary.

Cr Carston remarked that there were plenty of older towns than Dannevirke with worse streets. The Mayor said that if they touched High-street, he hoped they would do it thoroughly. Cr Fitzherbert suggested wood-pav-ing; ' The engineer said so far as the footpaths were concerned it was only a matter of measuring them up to see what the cost of putting them in repair would be. High-street was a different matter. He had already made a survey -of the street, but as he was so busy with the sewerage he would not be prepared to make a detailed estimate for about three weeks. Cr Haines remarked that that would suit his purpose. ; It was generally agreed'that it was too la.te this year to do anything, and that when the estimates were being prepared, next year the matter might be considered. The subject then, dropped.
