Mr Asquith, in a speech at Fife, declined to promise legislation of any kind till they had settled conclusions with the House of Lords. That permanent obstacle must be removed, and till this was done it was no use talking about legislation. The Liberal party was free to support any. measures giving Ireland self-govern-ment in pui-ely Irish affairs, subject to the unimpaired supremacy of the Imperial Parliament. He was not prepared to give a pledge, respecting the House of Lords' judgment as to the payment of Labor members, but he would consider the subject. The Canadian newspapers describe Joseph Martin, who has been elected for East St .Pancras, as the "'stormy petrel" of Canadian politics. ASQUITH FAVORS MANHOOD SUFFRAGE. (Received January 21, 8.25 a.m.) LONDON, January 20. Mr Asquith, speaking at Largowood, replying to questions, said he proposed to pass an Act of Parliament to limit the Lords' veto to the life-time of a single Parliament. He was in favor of manhood suffrage, subject to reasonable restrictions. He added, in reply to a further question, that he. had always been opposed to woman suffrage, which would not be good for women or the State. During the elections many Nonconformist preachers urged their congregations to vote for the Liberals.
