BRITISH ELECTIONS.

HEAVY POLLING

NEWSPAPER COMMENTS

Press Assn—By telegraph—Copyright. (Received January 19, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 18. The largeness of the polls throughout the country is duo in some degree to the mildness of the weather. Ten thousand Durham miners, dissatisfied with their agent's agreement with' the coal-owners respecting the Eh'ht Hours' Act, demonstrated against Johnson, the Labor candidate at Gateshead. They rioted when passing one colliery, Avhere tliey did much damage. . To-morrow they march against the Lahor candidate, Bishop. The Unionist newspapers recognise that a tremendous effort is still required to bring down the Government majority to anything like a vanishing point. The Dailv Mail says that no danger could be greater than that of the, Nationalists holding the balance, and now is the time that all moderate men and wise Liberals must rally to the country. The naval ports had given them the lead. The Chronicle says that up to the present it looks like an ultimate maforitv exceeding that of Gladstone's in 1885.
