Deceased, whose nativ-ei name was Airini Kaeauria!, had beeli" an important figure in European ; -and Maori affairs for the last 25 year^f • She was closely allied by blood with the leading chiefs of Ngati Kahungunu, including Teakitai, TempaUjanui, Ta-roha,*--Renat4i....lCa,>vepo^._|M^ I ;r..._ot|j.'c^ t , which gave her '"manajf ,a, prestige and standing unique" in Maori ~ history. She was noted for her lavish hospitality; and able and determined defence' of her people's Tights, her appearance iii Native Land Courts being a .revelation, of knowledge and advocacy! She- was a prominent figure on all occasions iii the entertainment 'of; illustrious, European visitors, among the most notable being the Duke and iMichess-of York, who, with their Majesties King Edward and Queen , Alexandra, reciprocated her hospitality most royally when Mrs Donnelly a few years ago visited England. Her loss will bo felt by both races. She was the essence of -charity. ' Her own people have lost a great champion, and the community at largo one of tho few rangatira links binding us with Maori past and the early history of Hawko's Bay.
