CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting of the above was held last evening. Present: — Messrs Bickford (chairman), Uar.oii], Rathbone, Perkins, Spence, Wmii, Robertson, Bain, and Dobson (secretary).
CORRESPONDENCE
From Messrs Anderson, Sov.-.r aiid Co., conveying thanks to the Chamber for services rendered in connection with loading rights at Piri Piri siding. — Received.
From T. Roynane, re Piri Piri siding, stating that the matter is under action, and he hopes to have it definitely settled early.
From C. Hall, M.P., acknowledging receipt of petition re Maunga Road, and stating that he had ieqnested that the road be made an urgent work. — Received.
From same, letters (1) in re re "ence to Piri Piri siding; (2) re pilfering at railway sidings, and flag station, stating that -he had many' times pointed out to the department that there is insecurity in all the goods sheds, but the Department say they cannot place men at each of the stations and .sidings, and if they lock up the goolg the owners could not get at them. He would .suggest the duplicate key system; (3) re petition for construction of .Law's Road : he had forwarded it to the proper authorities, and asked that it have favorable consideration. The petition came late in the session. There would havo been much more hope if it had been seu-i* earlier. However, he would do highest to get something on the t*timates. He stated that the pettt'on would have carried more weight if it had had the County Council's assurance, and contained information re cost, etc ; (4) re justice of peace signing Customs declarations, and asking Chamber to suggest a justice who would be available for the purpose. — Decided to. recommend Mr J. RRussell. Mr Wratt moved, Mr Robertson seconded that Mr Hall be thanked for his services. — Carried.
From the secretary of the Pa line vston Chamber, re additional Jplephone wire between Dannevirke and Palmerston North, -stating that I. is Chamber had resolved to co-operate with the Dannevirke Chamber. — The chairman said he thought this was a very important matter. They all knew the delay that was occasioned when anyone needed connection wit'i Palmerston .
Mr Perkins endorsed this viesv. ami said the delays in obtaining connections were great and were annoying.
Mr Ransom moved, and the chairman seconded, that the PostmasterGeneral be written to urging upon him the necessity of having Damievu'ke connected with Palmerston imuv diately with a direct wire, and that tliu Palmerston Chamber be written to asking their immediate co-opera-tion. — Carried.
Mr Rathhone said that the ftaumati settlers had asked him to conv»s* to the chamber their thanks fo-t.-eir services in. connection with the opening o-f the Piri Piri siding to the gillie; he also wished to thanii the Climber on his own behalf.
It was decided to write Mr H'aU. asking him vhat steps had been takci in connection with the propo sad overhead bridge or subway at the railway station.
Mr Bain moved that Mr Hall be approached in the matter of having the Otawhao block taken over by the Government for closer settlement. Mr Spence seconded, and the motion was carried.
